PIAKO PIONEER
Jill DANIEL CASEY’S RECORD
At the Piako county diamond jubilee reunion the distinction of being the oldest pioneer present must have gone to Mr Daniel Casey, of Waharoa, father of Messrs 0., J. and W. Casey, of Waharoa ' and Matamata. Although over four score years, Mr Casey still enjoys good health. Mr Casey came from Ireland to Auckland in 1875, and immediately came to Waikato. From Mercer to Hamilton passengers travelled by boat, and there were then no bridges across the Waikato river at Hamilton. Mr Casey remembers when seven plough teams were seen working after each other on the Lockerbie estate. He did not work long at Lockerbie, but moved on to adjoining estates.
In the early days the Lockerbie Estate was owned by Messrs T. and S. Morriu, after whom the town of Morrinsville, which grew up on the estate, was called.
