QUEEN ELIZABETH
EMPIRE EMBLEMS FOR CORONATION GOWN DIAMONDS AND PEARLS HER CHOSEN JEWELS ■‘J! I'. Times" Special Service.—l’y Air Mail London, Jan. 29. All-British materials will be used for the making of the gown and robe which Queen Elizabeth will wear at the Coronation. Designs are being prepared for the gown, which will be of specially woven, deep ivory white duchesse satin, intricately embroidered in gold thread, with an emblematic all-over design. The Coronation dress worn by a Queen-Consort is subordinate to the Imperial robe beneath which it is worn and is of a formal order rather than dictated by fashion. It is probable that Queen Elizabeth’s gown will be made very much on the same lines as that worn by Queen Mary at her Coronation in 1911 —cut on princess lines, with short sleeves finishing above the elbow and a little chenisette of lace. Symbolic embroidery combining emblems of Great Britain and the Empire will decorate the dress back and front—oakleaves and acorns, the Tudor rose, thistle, shamrock, the Star .of India, and the lotus lily figured in the making of Queen Mary’s gown. Nearly a dozen different tones and types of gold thread were used for working the design to produce variation of tone. The chemisette was of Irish and hand-made gold lace, and similar laces trimmed the sleeves. Queen Elizabeth's gown will be designed for wearing beneath the Imperial robe of royal purple velvet specially woven in England for the occasion, and white shoes embroidered to match the gown will be worn. Magnificent diamonds*and pearls will form the Queen’s Jewels. Lavish embroidery of gold will decorate the Royal Coronation robe, which will be one-and-a-half yards wide and six yards from shoulder to edge of train. *■ The Queen will not wear a veil when she drives to the Abbey, and a striking contrast will be provided by the simplicity of her uncovered hair on the outward journey and the glittering crown and rich velvet robes which she win wear on the return drive to Buckingham Palace.
