FIRE BRIGADE

annual meeting REVIEW of PAST YEAR’S WORK TWENTY-TWO calls The annual meeting of the Tauranga Volunteer Fire Brigade, held in the social room o£ the fire station last night, was attended by Superintendent Arthur Stewart <m the chair), Deputy-Superintendent F. Bickers, Foreman It. Hartnett, Driver J. Downey, Firemen A. .1. Gilmore. W. Padiie, G, Fletcher, M. Hartnett, 51. Curtis. A. Bacon,, C. Haua, H. Inkers and P. Sander

(Secretary). The minutes of the last annual

meeting were road and confirmed.

.Superintendent’s Keport

The Superintendent in submitting the report on his first year’s working as Superintendent stated: “I regret that I am unable to report as favourably as ex-Superintendent Padlie reported in bis report of last year. During the term now icported on there was a total of 22 calls. While practically all of them were minor outbreaks, which resulted in very little loss to owners and Insurance Companies, we have on record the .very serious fire of the Tauranga Hotel Block which resulted in a total loss, at a damage estimated at £12,000.

"In passing I must congratulate the members of the Brigade on the very smart and efficient manner in which they have responded to calls. and carried out their duties as such occasions arose.

“Several changes have been made in the personnel of the Brigade, through members resigning, but I am pleased to report that there is no shortage of applications for membership.

"During the year the competitions have again been very keenly contested and carried through, some very good and close times having been registered.

"The Brigade was again represented in the Chilton Cup competition. On that occasion Whakatane proved the best of the five Brigades competing.

‘T am also pleased to report that the half-yearly competitions between the Te Puke Brigade and ourselves for the Tim and liu Cup were duly carried out. It possible, the keenness shown in this competition was greater than ever. At the moment Te Puke are the holders of the Cup. “During the year the Brigade was in the very happy position of having another trophy, a Cup, presented to them for competition. The donor on this occasion was Mr Robert Mann, and on behalf of the Brigade I thank Mr Mann most heartily. “I take this opportunity of thanking those who have helped us during the year, especially the donors of trophies. Without competitions, the keenness of members might lag and the work would be, perhaps, a little tiresome.

"I have to report that the balance sheet Is not in as firm a position as in former years. This has been brought about by the fact that the Brigade has not completed its list of hon. members, and, therefore, the full list of donations does not appear op the balance sheet. “In bringing this report to a close I wish to thank the Tauranga Fire Board for the kind consideration given to all matters affecting the Brigade which came before it during .the year. I also wish to thank the Press (or the publicity given to all Brigade matters, and our worthy gardener, Mr L. Monk, for his attention to the garden and grounds.” The balance sheet was read and showed that the various accounts were In credit. Deputy - Superintendent Bickers moved—That the Superintendent’s report and the balance sheet be adopted.— Seconded by Fireman Padlie and carried. Election of Officers. On the motion of Fireman Downey, seconded by Fireman H. Bickers, Foreman H. Hartnett was- unanimously re-elected Foreman. Fireman Padlie moved—That Fireman P, Sander be re-elected Secretary and Treasurer. —Seconded by Foreman Hartnett and carried with applause. * General Business. The Superintendent made appreciative reference to the excellent manner in which Mr Monk kept the gardens and grounds of the station. It was unanimously agreed to make the usual donations to the honorary gardener, the caretaker, - the secretary, and the auditor. Superintendent Stewart and De-puty-Superintendent Bickers were appointed Trustees of the brigade’s account at the Post Office savings Bank.

The question of altering the basis of allocation of various trophies was discussed.

It was resolved that there be a minimum of nine runs for the year for the competition trophies.

The Superintendent moved—That the meetings of the brigade be held °u the last Tuesday of each month, and that the medal runs be held on the same night.—Seconded by Foreman Hartnett and carried.

Fireman Bickers moved—That the Card Committee, Messrs W. Padlie and F. Armer, be thanked for their work in connection with the card tournaments.— Seconded by Driver Downey and carried. Votes of thanks were passed to Messrs R. Bamberry (auditor and timekeeper), F. Armer (handicapPer and timekeeper) and L.
