VALUABLE MARE SHOT

NEW ZEALANDER’S LOSS Brisbane, May 20. At Ipswich Show, Mr H. D. Retsenleiter, in announcing the scratching of his champion Clydesdale mare, Meadow Bank Phyllis, from competition, stated that she had been deliberately shot in one of his paddocks by an unknown trespasser. The horse had been shot at close range. Two bullet wounds were found near her shoulder blade and fore leg, and there was also a gaping wound near the heart, apparently made by such weapon as a bayonet. The mare, which was imported from New Zealand in 1934, cost 350 guineas, and was female champion at Brisbane Royal Exhibition last, year.
