FATHER OF THE BIRDS

The “Father of the European Bird World” has died. He was Dr. Heinrich Lumpe, and this high-sounding title was bestowed upon him on World Animal Protection Day in 1932. Dr. Lumpe was born in Bavaria in 1559, and started life as an iron merchant; but he loved wild birds and gave the greater part of his time to their interests, creating a propaganda of mercy and founding a bird sanctuary which has long been famous.
