WHAKAMARAMA NOTES

(From our correspondent.) Light frosts followed by sunny days prevailed over the week-end. The frosts although light, will check growth and pastures will soon become short as is usual in winter. Several crops are said to be considerably affected with rot no doubt "due to the very wet season experienced, although it may be due partly to the white butterfly; but this pest was by no means as plentiful as was the case last season. KITC’HE.\ EVENINO Miss Ina Sharplin, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs T. P. Sharplin, who is to be married shortly, was given a kitchen evening on Friday last. Favoured with a fine night a large number of local people gathered in the School Hall, while quite a number journeyed from Omokoroa and Te Puna. In a few choice words Mr George Odey, as one of the oldest settlers present, referred to Miss Sharplin’s popularity. There could be no doubt about it he said. One had only to glance around the large gathering; which included representatives of every local family, to be assured on that point. On behalf of those present he wished Miss Sharpliu long life, health, happiness, and prosperity. He then called on Mrs M. J. Rundell, organiser of the evening to say a few words, which this lady did in her usual businesslike manner. Amid much good humoured banter the large collection of presents was then opened by Miss Sharplin, and many useful and attractive presents were displayed. Mr W. Lauder replied on behalf of Miss Sharplin, and thanked all those present, remarking that the evening would be long remembered by them both. The singing of “She’s a Jolly Good Fellow” closed a happy interlude in the evening, dancing being then resumed. Music was supplied by Mrs Allan Sharplin and Mrs M. J. Rundell, while the floor arrangements were in the capable hands of Mr L. Hearfield, Supper and a last waltz brought a very enjoyable evening to a close. Meeting of Householders A meeting of householders was held on the evening of Wednesday last for the purpose of electing a school committee the following being elected;—Messrs G. Odey (chairman), M. J. Rundell, Alf Sharplin, J. Humphries, and Allan Sharplin. On taking the chair Mr Odey briefly referred to the efforts of the retiring chairman, Mr D. P. Lloyo and committee.
