The death has occurred of Mr William John Hales, well known on the Thames and Upper Thames goldfields, who passed away at the residence of his daughter, Mrs R. White, Waihi Beach, at the ripe old age of 78 years. Born in Cornwall, deceased was brought out to New Zealand by his parents when two years old, and in his early manhood joined in the gold rush to the Thames field, and later took part in the rush to Gympie, Queensland. On returning from Australia he continued to follow mining at Thames and Waihi, being a member of the executive of the Ohinemuri Mines and Batteries Union until the time of his retirement from office and his calling, due to ill-health.
