THE WAISTCOAT
In the parish records of West Ham is an entry that an 18th-century Mr Davies “left £ 4 a year to be laid out in 12 waistcoats for 12 poor women.” The waistcoat was in those days a women’s garment, and only later was it adopted for men. That is why our tailors often call it a vest.
