HIGHWAYS SEALING
WJUEXIXG OF WAIKAKEMOAXA HOAD -
Following several delays caused by the recent bad weather the sealing of main highways in the Rotorua district is again progressing satisfactorily and if further delays are not caused the work should be completed in plenty of time tor tbe Easter traffic (says the Rotorua Post). With the exception of several stretches where widening and new cuttings have been necessary the sealing of the Mamaku route is now completed and it is anticipated that the new cuttings will have consolidated sufficiently to allow of the surfaces being sealed within six weeks. The sealing of the Whakatane main highway at Te Ngae has been held up for some time owing to it being necessary that the surface should be perfectly dry before being sprayed but operations were commenced again yesterday and before many days have passed the first coating should have been laid. Five miles of sealing is also to be done on the Taupo main highway to connect with the stretch which will he done to the borough boundary under the loan proposals recently approved by the ratepayers.
About 70 men are at present employed on widening operations on the route to Waikaremoana and as oiher works are completed the number of men employed on this job will be gradually increased to 110, which is the present limit of the accommodation provided. The widening of the Waikaremoana route will probably occupy about three years.
