LOCAL AND GENERAL
Many business people were much inconvenienced on Saturday owing to the Bank holiday for St. Andrew’s Day. We regret having overlooked the fact ourselves and consequently did not give the customary warning, although the Banks themselves might reasonably be expected to advertise the fact. The somewhat Insignificant notice in a window usually above the line of sight is of little real value. On Wednesday last a break occurred in the water main near the Pye’s Pa Road, cutting off the supply for a few hours, but fortunately no serious Inconvenience resulted. The break was caused through the bursting of an asbestos-cement pipe which the Borough Engineer, Mr Boak, had had put in for experimental purposes about five years ago. There is no apparent cause for the break beyond what appeared to be a minute fracture. Fortunately the length of pipe taken out to ' make room for the experimental length Was still on hand nearby, thus facilitating the work of restoring the service. A Pair of porpoises came inside the harbour yesterday afternoon and were seen for a time in Pilot Bay after which they moved away towards Whareroa.
