VISIT OF CHESS CHAMPION.

Sir.—On the 21st and 22nd of next month we are to be honoured by a visit from a very prominent Australian gentleman, Mr Cecil Purdy, the champion chess player of Australia. There are many lovers of the. grand old game in and around Thuranga and this letter is written in an endeavour to get all those chess players together, so that a right royal welcome may be accorded to our distinguished visitor. Also arrangements are being made wnerpby we can take advantage of Mr Purdy’s visit to play a series of games in keeping with the occasion. Tentative plans are for a lecture by the master and a. demonstration of bllndrold playing, as vtell as simultaneous games with as many players as can be mustered from this and surrounding districts.

Many players will recall the pleasant evening spent at Rotorua a few years ago, when a party of Tauranga chess players nelped to make up the grand total of 46 tables—-as far as my memory serves-r-when Mr Goldstein, another prominent player, handled that ‘ number of games simultaneously, winning ■ something like forty of them outright. An advertisement appears in this issue of the Bay of Plenty Times, calling a meeting of those interested and it is hoped that every chess player in the district will attend—the opportunity is being seized to resurrect the Tauranga Chess Club/ which, unfortunately, has been dormant for some years. GEO. R. WEST,
