RETIREMENT OP MR K. S WILLIAMS.

. Opotiki, June 27

The announcement that Mr K. S. Williams, M.P., for Bay of Plenty, does- not intend to seek re-election at the general election was made at a representative meeting of OpotlU and district supporters of the National Political Party last evening. Discussions were held with Mr 1 D. Ardell, the Dominion Organiser of the Party, in regard to a candidate to represent ■ the electorate. It is understood that Mr J, T. Merry, of Opotiki, was unanimously selected as the candidate from the' Opotiki centre.. In the event of there being further candidates chosen from other parts within the electorate, a joint committee will probably recommend who shall be the official candidate. ■ '

Mr Merry was the official candidate of the United Party at the last election, but when the Coalition Government was formed he withdrew from, the contest at the invitation of the Government In favour of Mr Williams, the -sitting member.
