Mrs Brain, who was born in Southampton. was eighty-nine years of age, and was a daughter of Mr William Bishop, of Compton Castle, Torquay, Devonshire. She came out to New Zealand in the sailing ship Countess of Kintore in the year ISISS, and two years later was married to Captain Joseph Brain, who shortly afterwards gave up the sea and later settled in Tauranga. Captain Brain was a pilot on a gunboat which patrolled the Waikato River during the time of the Maori War, and could tell of numerous exciting incidents of the troublous days. Mrs Brain was of a retiring disposition and spent most of her time in her own home and garden. Her husband predeceased her by ten years. She is survived by five daughters—Mrs W. T. Teasey, of Tauranga, Mrs D. McNaughton. of Manurewa, Mrs H. Lever, of Papatoetoe, and the Misses B. and E. Brain, of Tauranga. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, the service at the graveside being performed by the Rev. C. R. Taylor. MR THOMAS HENRY BAYLIS. The death occurred at his residence, Monmouth Street, last night, of Mr Thomas Henry Baylis. The late Mr Baylis, who was fifty-eight years of age, was born at Thames, and later accompanied his parents to Hukerenui, North Auckland, where he was engaged in farming. About seventeen years ago he commenced business in Tauranga and then moved to Point Chevalier, Auckland. Three months ago he returned to Tauranga. He always enjoyed good health, but had a very severe heart attack on Saturday evening and failed to rally, passing away shortly before eight o’clock last night. Mr Baylis is survived by his widow and three daughters, Mrs N. Compton and Mrs R. Wheaton, of Herne Bay, Auckland, and Mrs C. Armstrong, of Frankton Junction. There are also two grandchildren. Much sympathy will be extended to the relatives in their sudden bereavement. The funeral will take place at three o’clock to-morrow afternoon.
