PAGE FROM THE PAST.
TAURANGA FIFTY YEARS AGO. Not infrequently we have referred in these notes to the oft-expressed saying that the seasons are changing, the weather is colder than it used to be. Well, just read these two items, taken from the Bay of Plenty Times of August 25th, 1883; “An inquest was held at OrOpi on Thursday before Captain Tovey, J.P.. Coroner for the. County. It appears that the fire at the Oropi hotel originated in the back parlour,' but it is impossible to say from what cause. Mr J. F. Buddie represented the South British Insurance and Mr W. M. Commons the Union Insurance Companies. During the time of the sitting a heavy fall of snow took place,” •
Here is the other—- “ The weather, has been unusually cold since Thursday, and the Te Puke ranges and all high lands towards Oropi, Te Aroha, arid Katikati were covered / with snow yesterday morning. In some places the snow did not thaw at all. There has not been such piercing cold here for seven years. It has been remarked by several shipmasters trading both north, and south of the line that of late'the; ice floes are meKwith in unusual latitudes.”
A telegram from Dunedin in the same issue is interesting. . “The Public Works Department offered to open a section on the Otago Central Railway for the unemployed at 28s per week. This the men corisidered inadequate.”
