BOROUGH STREETS

Estimates For Current Year

ADOPTED BY BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the Tauranga Borough Council to consider and deal with the estimates for the current year was held last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor. Mr A. F. Tunks (in the chair). Crs. F. J. Allely, J. M. Dairies, L. Norris. C. Whiting, J. Law, A. E. Newsham. J. F. Russell Wallace and V. J. Scantlebury. The consideration of the schedule of estimated revenue and expenditure was taken in committee, and occupied three hours .and a-half. The following schedule concerning streets expenditure, as presented by Cr Whiting, Chairman of the Works Committee, was adopted:

The amount spent on streets maintenance last year was £2428. Cr Whiting referred to a proposal to remove the crusher from the present site on the waterfront. He said it was proposed hy the Works Committee to erect a derrick near the Hairini Bridge, convey the spawls from the quarry to Hairini, and then load the spawls on to lorries for conveyance to the old sanitary depot in Hunter Street, where the crusher would be erected. A road could be made and the crushed metal loaded from the hoppegs into the lorries. The cost was estimated at £267. Mr A. J. Withy, Hon. Secretary of the Public Library, wrote as follows: “With regard to the subsidy voted by your Council for the upkeep of the public reading room and library, my Committee think a better arrangement than has been the practice in the past would be, that the Council should make a straightout vote of, say, not less than £IOO, to be paid quarterly to the Library ’ Committee, and that they should he responsible for all disbursements in connection with the running of the institution. By this arrangement all the accounts would pass through our books, as they have not done in the past, and this would show the true position. From the enclosed list you will see that the running 61 the reading room has cost £93 3s. In addition the insurance on the books, which are the property of the Council, coats £G 15s.

“Cost of Reading Room.—Supervision, £SO; Papers, £2O 10s 3d, Lamps, £2 9s 3d; Cleaning Reading Room.’ £ll 14s; Magazines, £8 0s 6d; Total, £93 3s; Insurance of Bocks, £6 155.” The Council agreed to vote a subsidy of £IOO, conditional on the terms set out in the Committee’s letter. Last year the subsidy was £9O. Mr T. Milne, Hon. Secretary of the Tauranga Municipal Band, wrote asking the Council to increase the subsidy to the Baud, if possible. He pointed out that the Band required another bass and a euphonium.

Mr Milne also wrote stating that in August last the Council gianted a radiator for use in the Band Room, but over £4 was • deducted from the subsidy to pay for it. The Executive Committee strongly objected and asked that the money be refunded..

After discussion the Band subsidy was fixed at £l3O. Bast year it was £IOO. Mr A. Birch, lion. Secretary of the Tauranga Amateur Swimming and Life Saving Club, wrote asking that provision be made on the estimates for the building of seating accommodation at the municipal baths. The Council agreed to place £IOO on the estimates —£70 on upkeep and £3O for construction. Last year, the expenditure was £75. and included money spent on conveniences at Honolulu Beach in the vicinity of Sixth Avenue. The item on the estimates for borough gardener and assistant wa-s increased to £3 25. Last year it was £207. The question of reducing the water charge* for lavatories was considered and it was decided that it be fixed at five shillings per la.vatory. where more than one is in use, with a minimum charge of seven shillings and sixpence.
