WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

MEETING AT TAURANGA. ' There was a good attendance at the opening meeting on Tuesday last of the Tauranga Women’s Institute, which was held in Mrs Brewster’s gardens. The minutes of the last meeting were read and various business was discussed.

It was decided that articles) of thrift, made by members, be exhibited »at the Tauranga ll A. and P. Styw on March 1, Miss Gavey acting ae judge for same. .

A community quilts, also made by T.W.I. members, will be offered as a’ prize in a guessing competition on the same day at the stall. t It was decided to hold a picnic on March 15 at Mount Maunganui on the occasion of the official opening of the rest home.

The President gave a splendid address on “Aims and Rules of Institutes and of the starting of Women’s Institutes in N.Z.”

Members * especially enjoyed the three excellent demonstrations given by Mrs Ripley—egg-shell work, organdie and Italian embroidery. A vote of thanks was passed and carried in the ueual way to Mrs Ripley. A competition, “Sponge cake with batter” was judged by Mrs Hammond, senr. The prize winners were: Mrs J. Armstrong, Ist; Mrs Smedley, 2nd.; Mrs Jones 3rd.

The hostesses were Mesdamee Hunter, Hammond, Hickey; and _ Isherwood, who served, a most enjoyable Institute afternoon tea. The Paengaroa Women's Institute met on February 16. when Miss Cruickshank presided. The previous meeting took the form of a picnic to the seaside, which all enjoyed. Being the first business meeting In the year Mrs Hickson was elected president. The roll call, “How to Improve Our W.I. Meetings,” met with many good ideas and helpful suggestions for the future. Mrs Matthews, convener of the amusement committee, contributed a song, and the hostesses were Mesdames Mailman, Steele and Pearce.
