SOUTHERN CROSS
RETURN TRIP TO AUSTRALIA. Wellington, Feb.2o Sir Charles Kingsford Smith returned by the Makura to-day from Sydney. . After considering a report by the Government meteorologist,. Dr E. Kidson, upon the general weather conditions in March, Sir Charles decided to fly the Southern Cross back to Australia about the end of March. Accompanying him will be Captain P. G. Taylor, co-pilot and navigator, Mr J. W. Stannage, wireless operator, Mr J. T. Pethybridge, engineer,' and Mr J. Percival, junr., or another passenger. Mr Pethybridge, who is a licensed pilot, will have the place occupied by Mr S. E. Nielson on the trip to'New Zealand. Sir Charles hopes to leave New Plymouth for Ninety-Mile Beach on Friday, March 24, and will then await favourable winds. The report of Dr Kidson was to the effect that in March conditions are favourable. Records show that there should be four or five days in April when a flight could be made in safety. Sir Charles will probably make a trial flight in the Southern Cross at Palmerston North on Friday.
