PETROL TAX
Auckland, Feb. 17. Strong protestsMvere voiced at last night's meeting of the council of the Auckland Automobile Association, against the increase in the petrol tax, and it was decided, on the motion of Dr. Lowrie, that the North acpd South ' Island Motor Unions should fight to have the tax of 5d a gallon removed. The president of the council, Mr A. Grayson, explained that he had been in touch with the secretary of the North Island Motor Union, and had been, informed there) was a possibility of a reduction being conceded. It was just a question now whether the union should stay the fight against the tax for the time being on the chance of getting a reduction, or enter into a fight to get the whole 5d removed. Mr Butcher said that motorists had got their back up over the tax. Since Monday last the sales at petrol stations had dropped 50 per cent, in the case of private cars, and 25 per cent, in the case of commercial cars. It was a loss that the Minister of Finance would never recover.
