AERO CLUB

CAPTAIN BRAKE’S LECTURE. Yesterday was a busy day for members of the Aero Club. Taking advantage of Captain Brake's stay in Tauranga, a good number of pupils had extra lessons, keeping the 'plane busy from about 1 o’clock until nearly 4. In the first part of the time the wind was gusty from the west, making landing difficult, but about 2 o’clock it veered suddenly to the north, giving almost ideal conditions, of which the advanced pupils availed themselves to take concentrated landing practice. In addition to the pupils’ flights, a visitor to the town happening to have a birthday, very wisely thought the best way to celebrate was to have a look at Tauranga from the air, and accordingly went aloft and for the first realised to the full the beauty of our town and its surroundings. In the evening there was a big muster of both active and associate members for Captain Brake’s talk to his pupils in which lie explained more fully than was possible in the course of the individual lessons, the control and management of the engine, both in starting and whilst in the air; the co-ordination of joy stick and rudder for turning and banking; the correct line of approach to an aerodrome to ensure successful landing within the allotted area, and the finer points of taking off and landing, including the porper way to achieve a true three point contact with the ground. The lecture was closely followed by all present and will undoubtedly show results in improved progress on the flying field. Weather permitting, Captain Brake will leave for Matamata at the conclusion of this afternoon’s flying, and will return for the usual lessons on Wednesday afternoon next, the 7th inst. On Tuesday next there will be a committee meeting in the Mayor s room at 7 p.m., and on Wednesday night Captain Laurenson’s lecture to members and friends in the Council Chamber at S o’clock.
