BUTTER PRICES
CUTTING BY STORES. The price charged suppliers for butter at the Te Aroha West factory was raised at the meeting this week (says the Te Aroha News). Mr Burgess said superfine could be purchased cheaper at Te Aroha than at the factory. Mr Pacey said the price charged at the factory was a half-penny above the wholesale price. The trouble probably was that some of the stores at Te Aroha were selling at a loss in the same way as they were at Palmerston North, where some storekeepers could buy butter cheaper at the stores cutting prices than from dairy companies and make a better profit. Mr Parlane said there was a lot of price .cutting at Te Aroha and Morrinsville. An attempt had been made to induce the storekeepers to charge a reasonable price but certain butter was sold at Morrinsville at a lower price than was paid for it to the factories. The storekeepers said the butter was well advertised, was a good line to handle and sold readily, helping to make the sales of other lines. Mr Ward: The price for suppliers was fixed when they were getting 2/G per lb. for butter-fat
