POSITION IN GERMANY
Hitler’s Bid For Chancellorship Denied!" UPHEAVALS CONTINUE. , London, Aug. 11 Tho Berlin correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says the lengthy conference between the President of Germany. Marshal von Hindenburg, and the Chancellor, Herr von Papen, is to bo resumed to-day. It is understood that there is a possibility of the Nazi leader, Herr Hitler, becoming Chancellor, perhaps also Prussian Premier, but under stringent guarantees. The correspondent says Herr Hitler will be entrusted with power, not as a party leader, but as nominal head of a “Cabinet of personalities” with Marshal Hindenburg, through General Schleicher, actually in control. Tho new development depends entirely upon the Centre Party’s attitude of benevolent neutrality. It is known that leading members of the party think it would be better to have Herr Hitler in office and “muzzled” than for him to continue his activities outside. The question is: Can Herr Hitler he “muzzled.” A new situation undoubtedly has arisen through the campaign of terrorism necessitating the reconstruction of the Cabinet earlier than was expected. It is persistently rumoured that Nazi “storm troops” are planning a march on the capital. Armed police are guarding the railways and public buildings. According to the Berlin correspondent of the Daily Express Marshal von Hindenburg refuses to consider Herr Hitler for the Chancellorship. This correspondent says the President told Herr von Papen that he would resign the Presidency rather than consent.
