Disadvantages of Tidal Aerodrome. INCIDENT ox Wednesday. The impracticability ol ~ a aerodrome was <'-eriy demonstrated afternoon when the northerly wind held up the outgoing w atcr with the result that when Captain Drake arrived from Matamata about o'clock (here was no space on the esmary available for landing, jte was therefore compelled to fly to the Racecourse and make a landing there. B>' t!l ° , ' !n '' 1 110 first lesson was finished the water had receded sufficiently for landing, and snbseruent lessons wen’ given from the E«tuar>" as usual, hut the incident emphasised the impossibility of the establishment of anything in the* nature of tourist si rvices to Tauranga by air until a suitable portion of the Estuary is nnwat-re-l to give a surface available for arrival or departure at all hours of the day. Captain Brake has been good enoagh to lend tho Tauranga Club one of the spare rotary engines belonging to the Avro ’plane, for instruction purposes, and Mr T. Baikie kindly brought it over from Metadata cm Wednesday. The engine is now ou view at Mr Connor’s garage in Selwyn Street. Mr Connor is taking it clown for verb:;’-! and will be; pleased to demonstrate it to any club members interested. Flying pupils in particular should not fail to avail themselves of this opportunity to acquire an intimate knowledge of the inner mechanism of the type of en--due they are using on their flights. It is proposed to pay a club visit to Matamata on Sunday next the 14th jnst., weather permitting. Several members of tho Matamata. Club are expected to lake their first solo flights on that day, and those Tauranga pupils who care to have a lesson over there will acquire the fresh experience of taking off and landing on grass and in a limited space. All members desiring to make the trip are requested to communicate with the Honorary Secretary (Phone 261) not later than noon on Saturday so that the Matamata Club may be advised hew many visitors to expect. There will be no flying this Saturday as the Estuary will be flooded all the afternoon, but lessons will be resumed on Wednesday the 17th, and; the. following Saturday, the 20th.
