BALDNESS.
HATS THE CAUSE MORE THAN WORRY. “It is certain that the wearing of hats causes more baldness than ‘worry’ could ever do. Our hair was given us to protect our head, and we do not really need other protection,” writes Mr Stanley Lief, N.D., D.C., in “Health for All.” “It cannot be denied that baldness almost always starts above the hatband. The hair below the hat is usually the last to be affected. When hats, especially heavy, tight-fitting ones, are worn, what is the result?“First:—The necessary light and air cannot reach the scalp.
“Second:—Since the blood vessels and nerves pass up the back and sides of the head, and since the scalp is not very thick and the pressure is made against the skull, the nerve and blood supply is shut off, thus preventing proper nourishment reaching the hair, causing the roots to die of starvation.
“Third: —The scalp exudes poisons as does the rest of the skin. The hat prevents the escape of these poisons and they are re-absorbed by the scalp. “Fourth: —The heat of the head is shut in, with the result that the hair becomes like a hothouse plant through the lack of air and light “By pressure upon blood vessels a.nd nerves, preventing proper nourishment; by retention of perspiration and heat, the hair weakens and dies. “Your social or business position may prevent you from entirely discarding your hat, but if you value your hair, endeavour to discard a hat as often as possible. “There are reasons for thinking that frequent cutting of ' the hair short predisposes to baldness. The longer the hair, the more stimulation the hair roots obtain as a result of the weight of longer hair. It is certain that one of the reasons why women are not generally subject to baldness is that their hair has been always of a greater length than men’s.
