SUBSIDY QUESTION.

DEPARTMENT’S COMPLAINT. Auckland, August 9. A circular letter received last evening by the Papakura Town Board from the Public Works Department advised that claims for subsidies were being received in cases in which no attempt had been made to reduce wages or plant hire costs. It was stated that plant hire rates were now being considered by the Main Highways Board. The department’s rates of pay were given. -■ ■ The board decided to protest against the department’s action In forcing a reduction in rates of pay, and to point out that the ruling rates of pay now adopted by the department were less than those of the award governing local bodies. The opinion was expressed that there' should be negotiations in the matter of plant hire.
