Miss Marjorie Bayly, of New Plymouth, is spending a fortnight in Tauranga with friends.
A London cable states that Lieu-tenant-Colonel E. F. W. Lascelles, formerly of Haw'ke’s Hay, New Zealand. is standing for Colne Valley (Mr Snowden’s seat).
Mr W. S. Mackay, Vice-President of the Methodist Conference, is visiting Tauranga and is the guest of Mr and Mrs A, Brewer.
The death took place at Opotiki on Tuesday of Mr Hugh Thomas Torrens at the advanced age of 79 years. Born at Ballymena, County Antrim. Ireland, the late Mr Torrens arrived at. Dunedin in the ’sixties. He proceeded to the Thames goldfields, and later was manager of the Thames, Waihi and Paeroa branches of Hague Smith’s. He came to Opotiki in 1904 and started in business on his own account as a general merchant, from which he retired in 1 920, when he sold out. Since then he has been farming at Otakiri,
