Water Charges for Railway Houses. s alls of flkctrkttv Tin fort nightly meeting of the Tauranga Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday evening. Present: His Worship lh( Mayor, Mr B. C. Bobbins (in the cliait t. frs F. J. Allely, ,1. M. Haines, L. Norris, C. Whiting. L;iw, A. K. Nevvsham, J. F. Bussell Wallace. T, M. Bloor, and A. N. lies. Blau of Subdivision, Mr B. T. Colliding, surveyor and civil engineer, forwarded plans of proposed subdivisions in Sixth Avenue and Fdgcntnhe Bead. Me stated with legard to the subdivision of Al--I<>(m< til 151 that it is the intention of the owner to transfer a strip of la ml. fifteen feet, wide, along the western boundary, to the adjoining owner. Allotment 151. Section 11, fronts Sixth Avenue. Tlx other subdivision was part Hot 5 ol Allotments 5!B! and aha. Section 11. Cm' I"i fronts Fdgeeumbe Boad and the other fronts Hunter Street. Ci Allely moved That the plan be approved and sealed and signed by the Mayor and the Deputy-Mayor. Seconded by Cr Haines and curried. Ten Per Cent. Cut. Mi .1. Parnwell. who is employed at the abattoir, wrote asking the Council to consider the ten per emit, reduction in wages in his case, as lie was the only junior employee affected. He asked that he he paid an extra live shillings, plus (he restoration of the cut. Cr Newsham said the Abattoir Committee considered that Mr Pantwell should not he suited to the ten pur rent, cut. His wages prior to the cut. were £2 5s per week. He moved—That the wages he restored to 5s as from Hie last pay day. The motion was seconded by Cr Law and carried. Flower Show. Mr Alfred J. Gallagher, Hon. Secretary of the Beautifying and Horticultural Society wrote stating the Society intends holding its summer show on November 17, and desires to obtain the use of the Town Hall for that purpose. He added: “1 have to ask whether the Borough Council will be good enough to grant the Society the use of the Town Flail as one of the nights on which, I understand, the Council has the right to use that building free of charge. Compliance with this request will he greatly appreciated and will materially assist my Society to maki a financial success of the show at a time when the financial aspect requires most careful attention.” The Mayor stated he had interviewed Mr Tronson, manager for Tauranga Theatres, Ltd., and he had written to Mr Kerridge, the managing director, -who was agreeable to accede to the request. The Society was it deserving organisation. He moved —That the request he granted. The motion was seconded by Cr lies and carried.
Waste I’aper Receptacles
The Secretary of the Thoroughfare Advertising Co., Auckland, wrote applying for permission to install their waste paper receptacles in Tauranga. The conditions were forwarded, and one of these was that the Company was to receive a license for five years from the Council, granting sole advertising rights on the receptacles. All advertisements are subject to the approval of the Council.
Cr Norris movedI—That 1 —That the letter be received. —-Lapsed, no seconder. Cr Whiting moved —That the letter be referred to the Works Committee with ptnver to act.—Seconded by Cr Law and carried.
Approach to Presbyterian Church.
Mr F. 1). Armour. Secretary to the Board of Managers of St. Peter’s Presbyterian >Church. wrote drawing -attention to tlie bad state, in wet weather. of (hat portion of Cameron Road, from the edge of the bitumen to the footpath outside the Presbyterian Church. His Committee asked that something he done to obviate members of (lie congregation when getting out. of their cars having to step into the mud. Cr Dailies said he would like to sCe something done, as it was a bad place. He moved—-That the matter he referred to (he Works Committee with power to act. —Seconded by Cr Law and carried.
Pictures on Christmas Night
Mr M. Tronson. on behalf of Tauranga Theatres, Ltd., wrote applying for permission to screen pictures on Christmas night, December 25, HKH.
Cr Allely moved —That the request be granted.—Seconded by Cr Whiting and carried.
Topping a (lium-tree
Mr J. Law, lion, secretary of the Tauranga South Bowfing and Tennis Club, wrote asking permission to remove the top of the gum-tree, which is growing on thq bank adjoining the Club’s grounds. Cr Bloor said the tree was a dangerous one from the felling standpoint. He thought, it would be better to ringbark the tree and plant ivy round it.
Cr Wallace moved —That the matter be referred to the Works Committee, with power to act. —Seconded by Cr Daines and carried.
lat nd Transfer Act Notices
The District Land Registrar forwarded Land Transfer Act notices in respect of the following areas: Lots 704. 705. 706, Section 11. in favour of H. D. Baker. The notice is with reference to abuttal on Wrigley and Fraser Streets. Lot 707. Section 11, in favour of J. and J. Hickey. The notice is with reference to abuttal on Hospital and Fraser Streets. The communications were received. Cost of Haml-bashi. Mr J. R. Bongard wrote terminating the tenacy of the Council’s house on The Camp, and asked that an allowance of £2 12s Cd he made to him in connection with installing a hand-basin. Cr lies moved—That the matter be referred to the Endowment Committee, with power to act. —Seconded by Cr Wallace and carried. Mater Connection. Mr A. Fleming wrote slating he wishes to apply for a water connection to his property in Seventh Avenue. He understands there is no water main in the avenue and ho would like (he matter brought before the Council with a view of having tho connection made as soon as possible.
Cr Whiting said it was proposed to re-grado Seventh Avenue. Tlu; Mayor pointed out that the pipes from Morris Street would be available.
It was decided to refer the matter to (In' Works Committee and the engineer with power to act. Water for Hallway Cottages.
The Finance Committee recommended in regard to the water eh urges for railway collages. that the charge be amended to 30s e:u-h per yiar, to come into loree 1P32-33. Cr lies moved —That the recoin mendation be adopted.—Seconded ity CV Alleiy.
The Mayor explained that the concession could not be made for the current year. The motion was carried. Municipal Associal ion. The Acting-Secretary of the Municipal Association, Wellington, wrote in reference to the 192 conference and slated: “The Executive, at its last meeting gave consideration to the dale of holding the postponed conference and it was decided that it should commence on Wednesday, March 2. 192 2. The Executive, however, felt that owing to the continued depression the opinion of all affiliated local bodies should be sought as to the desirability of holding the 11)22 conference in Wellington instead of Rotorua, and felt that the major questions only affecting municipalities should l>e considered at such conference: that such major questions for consideration by the conference be selected by the executive after receipt of file remits from affiliated local bodies, including those remits already in hand for the postponed 1921 conference. I have, therefore, to ask you to take the opinion of your council upon tiie foregoing questions, and I shall be glad to receive your reply at the earliest opport unity." Remits should be forwarded not later than November 25 in order that they may be considered by the Executive at its next meeting, early in December.
The Mayor stated that the Rotorua Borough Council had 1 forwarded a communication asking that the conference be hold at Rotorua. He wa.s in favour of holding it at Rotorua. Cr Nowsham moved that the Council reply i hal it is in favour of the ('(inference at Rotorua.-—Cr Bloor seconded. Cr Wallace moved an amendment

The amendment was negatived and tin' motion, in favour of Rotorua, was carried 1 . , The question of preparing remits will In- considered at a future mooting.
engineer's Report
Tin? engineer, Mr C. W. Boak, submitted the following report: electricity. Considerable surplus energy bas been available for the Public Works Department during the past 2 5 days, and an average sale of 2(1,100 units lias been made. Four ranges have been connected during the above period. Streets. —The work on the domain football ground has been completed and the relief workers transferred to other works. The approximate cost, to the Domain Board will be £75. The report was adopted. Municipal Abattoir.
Mr A. T. Rutherford. Manager of the Abattoir, forwarded report for the month of September, giving the following particulars of stock slaughtered: Cattle. 7S; sheep. 202: calves, •(: pigs. 7. Slaughtering fees and sundries, £lO4 14s (id; September, 1920, £llß 18s.
Tlie report was received. Hardener's Report
Mr IV. Parlane, borough gardener, presented the following report for the month of September; All lawns have been cut regularly and are in first-class order. The cricket gound lias been mowed twice this month, but quicker growth will menu cutting oftener. The swings and other gear on tho domain have been greased regularly and are in good working order. The plot on Devonport Road lias been re-grassed and planting has taken (dace on Anson Street. Weeding on the various plots and rockeries has been attended to when the weather permitted. Trimming of lawns and weeding of footpaths on (lie Strand and domain has been done. The report was received. Endowment at Hairini. Ci Haines referred to a borough endowment at Hairini and moved — That the matter of re-letting the property lie referred to the Endowments Committee, with power to act. The motion was seconded by Cr ■Whiling and carried. Hospital Street.
Cr Newsham asked that some improvements be effected to Hospital Street. A resident had also asked for a street light at the junction of Fraser Street and Hospital Street. Tin Mayor said the Electricity Committee had decided not (■> recommend the light at present. Cr Newsham moved- That Site repairs he carried out to Hospital Street.- Seconded Ity Cr Law and carried.
