MAKETU.
CONCERT AND DANCE. From a Correspondent.) On Friday night last there was at least one place in New Zealand where depression could not raise his ugly head. This was at Maketu, where a school concert followed by a dance was being held. The large hall was packed to capacity while cheerfulness and good humour prevailed, as testified to by the whole-hearted and prolonged applause that greeted each item. The following programme was gone through without a hitch: National Anthem, school children; (a) “See our Oars,’’ song, (b) “Johnny Come Down to Hilo," song, senior pupils; “I See You,” song dance, primers: Hula. Maori, Lily Moko and Clester Tapsell; “In the Fashion.” recitation, Betty Wickliffe; Brighton Camp, dance, junior girls; “Hear the Echoes,” “Polly, Wolly Doodle,” senior pupils; "Ten Little Nigger Boys,” Maori primers: recitation, “Old Jack Frost," Lena Moses; "E Pari Ra.” senior girls; “Hare and Toitoise.” dialogue. Pahiriko Rolleston and William Ringer; “Poi Song,” (canoe), senior girls; duet, “Where are You Going to,” Bessie Rolleston, Anzac Tapsell; “Tip Toe Song," primers; Sellinger’s Round, dance, senior girls; “Golden Boat Song,” Primer 3 and Standard 1 girls; closing chorus, “Poata Rau,” all school children: haka, senior boys. In a programme where every item was a pronounced success it would bo invidious to attempt distinctions, yet the “Ten Little Nigger Boys.” the “Hula” and “Haka” deserve special mention, as these were enchored again and again. At the conclusion* of the concert the Chairman of the School Committee, Mr J. Nielsen, in a few wellchosen words, thanked the vast audience who braved the elements and so helped to swell the school funds. He also thanked the teachers and all who in any way added to the entertainment.
After a delicious supper, supervised by Mrs Ringer—who was ably assisted by the ladies of the district - was partaken of,. dancing held sway. The over-popular master of ceremonies, Mr Motu Mosesi excelled himself on this occasion, and certainly succeeded in making those present into a happy family.
