DARK SHADOW ON GERMANY’S FUTURE

Revision of Young Plan Demanded.

> APPEAL BY HINDENUURG

Berlin, Jan. 1 President von Hindenburg’s New Year message for the first time in,'cludes a vigorous demand for the revision of the Young Plan, which ihe states “is still casting a dark shadow on Germany’s future.” The | evacuation of the Rhineland was • the only fulfilment of last year's | hopes, the President states, and more I energy must be infused towards real | disarmament, not only as an act of ' international justice to Germany, but | also as the surest means of univer- : sal peace. Field-Marshal Hinderburg expresses regret that internal differences are tending .to tear the nation apart I and to frustrate united efforts against | common dangers. The Government’s I plan is the only hope of overcoming j the unexampled economic distress j and the people must rise above obstinate internecine quarrels between business interests and labour leaders, all patriots joining in a common effort to face the threat to upset the whole moral and social foundations of the nation. Germans in Poland. London, Dec. 31 A most delicate situation awaits the meeting of the council of the League of Nations on January 19, as Hie outcome of Polish disturbances over German minorities. Germany has already dispatched to the league three Notes, complaining that persons of German origin have been deprived of votes. Germany is sending Dr Curtius, the Foreign Minister, to Geneva to make most serious charges against Poland. It is likely that the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Mr A. Henderson, will be asked to preside, in view of Britain’s neutrality. It is alleged that Polish terrorism occurred in the Corridor district, which is one of Eur- ! ope’s danger spots. It is generally considered that Poland is in the wrong, the early admision of which would ease the tension. France, who is Poland's ally, favours an inquiry, but the other Powers consider that the League Council should give a decision on the evidence availi able without further delay.
