Money Raised by Garden Fete. QUESTION OF EXPENDITURE. A meeting of the Citizens’ Hospital League was held in the Borough Council Chambers last night, Mrs G. E. Burton presiding over a good attendance. Mrs Burton stated that the Secretary. Mrs Keene, had resigned, and the. actirig-Secretary, Miss Ollard, was unable to attend. Mr R. B. Shearman agreed to act as Secretary for the meeting. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Mrs E. Robinson wrote resigning from the League, owing to other activities. Mrs J. G. Green wrote resigning from the League, owing to not having the time to attend the same. Kirs Burton moved—That the resignations be accepted with regret, and in doing so made complimentary re- - fcrcnce to the work accomplished by Mgsdames Green and Robinson. The motion was seconded by Mrs Castles and carried. Reports of Circles. Mrs Tonkin, Secretary of the Visiting Circle, reported as follows; “Since our last meeting regular visits, numbering over sixty, have been paid to hospital patients, which I venture to say ai'e really appreciated,. Mrs Brewer has joined this circle and has proved of great assistance. We have received two letters expressing thanks and appreciation from relatives of patients, so encouraging us to carry on the visiting. Before Christmas our Entertainment Circle organised a concert for the benefit of patients and satff, both performers and audience thoroughly enjoying the evening. It is gratifying to hear the remarks of patients regarding the nursing staff, so I feel we should pass the compliment on. I would like, here, to thank those ladies who keep us supplied each week with beautiful flowers.” The report was received. Mrs Burton stated that Mrs Skinner reported that iams and preserves Infl been sent to the hospital. Entertainments had been ,given bv the Entertainment Circle. Mrs Pemberton also renorti'd for "the Circle, of , which she is sccretarv. and asked members to forward anv linen which they bad to the hospital. Appointment of Secretary. On the motion of Mr Shearman, seconded by Mrs Burton, Mrs M. P. Munro was appointed Secretary of the League. Garden Fete Proceeds. Miss Murray made appreciative < reference to the support of the various Circles, especially in connection with the Garden Fete. Miss Murray also referred to one of the! objects "of the fete, viz., the erection of verandahs for the very sick patients. Mrs Castles as one who had worked cd for the Garden Fete, said they understood Chat the funds were raised in order to provide the verandahs for patients, and she hoped the money would be devoted for the purposes for which it was raised. Miss Cooper agreed with Mrs Castles. Mr R. B. Shearman thought the moAey raised by means of the fete should go to the special object for • which it was raised, and He considered it would be. a wrong step to place the money in the general account. Mrs R. McKenzie agreed with the previous speakers, and contended the money • shou!djj|be expended on the purpose for which it was raised. Mrs Burton, in reply to the Rev. J. W, Smyth, said the money raised by the Hospital Fete, plus the subsidy. amounted to about £220. In reply to another question it was stated that the cost of the verandahs was estimated at £is6. The need for verandahs for very sick patients was stressed by several ■ speakers. Mrs Castles said the members of the Hospital League would not be inclined to work again if the money raised at the last fete were diverted , from the , purposes for which it was raised. , Mrs Burton said many members of V the Leagpc who. were not present bad stated to her that it would be Impossible ,to raise money for the hospital again if the proceeds from ;hc last feta were , diverted from the original purpose. Further general discussion .ensued, n regard to the action of the Hospifil Board in, connection with the proposed and the notice of notion bearing on the matter which s to be considered at the next meeting of the Board. Mrs McKenzie moved—That this neeting emphatically protests against he action of the Hospital Board in ising the money raised by the Hospital fete for any purpose other than hat for which it was raised; also, hat a deputation, comprising Mesdames Castles and McKenlae, and dessrs A. J. Sladden, S. G. Will:ock and 'D. A. Ivory wait on the loard in support of the protest md urge the Board to expend the noney for the purposes for which it vas raised. The motion was seconded bv Mrs d. P, Munro and carried'unanimousy. . Mr? Castles suggested that a pedum in support of flic protest might Ipc circulated for signature. - The suggestion of Mrs Castles ound favour and it was stated that uch a petition would be signed bv , numerous people. The suggestion ias adopted by the meeting • Mrs Scott-Maundreli moved—That opies of the petition be handed to IJ. members of the League for the lurposo of procuring signatures.— iccondcd by Mrs McKenzie and carted unanimously.
