EGG GRADING.
PROTECTING THE PUBLIC. The public have suffered in silence for a considerable time in regard to the purchase of eggs, having no redress (say« the Dominion). Where some shops have endeavoured to grade the eggs on a scale which would give the public a fair deal, others, have put all the eggs, large and small into one . basket,. charging full price, for the whole., . First-grade eggs should have a minimum weight of. two ounces.: but in recent months protests have been , coming forward at the number of so-called first-grade eggs., whidh-iiavc disappeared clean inside the .egg-cup, having to> be turned out again to get the top off. The larger poultry, producers Jhave Been aware of this "competition from small producers, and complaints have reached the poultry industry’ branch of the Agricultural Department, which has been investigating the matter. Conferences have beam held, and as a result proposals are to be placed before the Minister -of Agriculture (Hon. G. ;W,. Forbes) this week, asking for authority to) frame a few regulations to deal with the matter. The most important proposal is to establish a grading scheme, in which eggs for the local market shall be placed in three grades, in order to ensure that the public shall-have an article that is guaranteed as to size and quality. Grading tor export has been in operation ever since the export movement started, But it is hoped that by organisation the New Zealand market for eggs may be so encouraged and developed that the local market will absorb all supplies, thus giving a better return to the producers, who will have no overseas freight charges to meet. There aret indications that the New Zealand poultry industry is being carefully and thoroughly organised with a view to placing it on a firm and paying basis.
