COWS TO GO

No More Grazing on County Roads.

DECISION BY COUNCIL

The question of allowing milking cows to graze on the roads was raised at yesterday’s meeting of the Tauranga County Council. A request was received from a Maketu resident for the issue of a cow collar. Cr Morton said grazing was permitted on the Mount Maunganui roads, and should be continued. It was stated that the licenses at the Mount expired at the end of last : year. Cr Bailey moved —-That the registration of cows in the county be abolished. He contended that the Council could not accept liability in connection with licensed stock. Cr MaoDougall seconded. Cr Morton moved an amendment — That the Mount Maunganui district be excluded. Cr Lally seconded. He had no objection to extending the licensing of cows. The amendment was negatived. Cr Morton said there would be considerable risk from grass fires at Mount Maunganui. Cr Bailey’s motion was put and carried, Crs Morton and Lally dissenting. Cr Morton asked that his name be recorded against the motion.
