GANG MURDER AND BOMBINGS IN CHICAGO
Outrage in Theatre.
FORTY HOLD-UPS
New York, Feb. 3 The crime cycle in Chicago, which is almost unparalleled, oven for that city, was augmented to-day by a gang murder, the fourth in as many days, and two bombings, one in a theatre crowded with women and children. Forty hold-ups were listed on the police records in a ten-hour period. Shootings, robberies and sluggings have meantime also continued unabated. Three hundred •women and children were in the theatre in Hinsdale, a local suburb, when a bomb blast shook the building. They stampeded for the exits, screaming with fear. There was a crush in the doorways and many were in peril of being trampled to death. The second bombing outrage destroyed three shops and rocked the entire south-west side of Chicago early this morning. Thousands of residences within a radius of two miles were jarred and the streets were filled with terrified men, women and children, many in their night clothes No one is reported to have been in : jured, however. In the meantime the city’s financial position continues to be unsettled. One thousand three hundred employees will agree to a 15 per cent, cut in their salaries rather than have 200 of their number discharged. A large number of suburbs are also facing financial pressure, due to the delay in the collection of the 1028-20 taxes. Doubts concerning the legality of the tax law are known to be responsibilo for Chicago’s difficulties. Charges of mismanagement and spendthrift policies arc blamed for the particularly critical plight of the city
