MORPETH WINS VICTORIAN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

A POPULAR VICTORY

Melbourne, Aug. 9 In the final match for the amateur golf championship of Victoria on the Commonwealth links to-day Sloan Morpeth (New Zealand) defeated A. Hancock (Victoria) by 2 up and I to play. The compeiilo’-s in the championship formed the most classic field which has yet contested the event. The New Zealander's victory 's popular and well merited, and was won by consistently good golf. While Morpeth is elated with his win, he is decidedly modest as to his own capabilities as a golfer. His driving was a feature of a thrilling game. An exceptionally large gallery followed the match, which was played in boisterous weather. Morpeth's longest drive was 295yds, anil Hancock’s 280yds. At the first hole in the morning Morpeth outdrove Hancock by 10yds. Both were Byds past the pin at the second hole, which was halved, as was the third, at which both putted brilliantly. WHAKATANE, V. TAURANGA. In a match played during the week-end at Gate Pa between teams representing the Whakatane and Tanranga Golf Clubs the local club proved too strong a combination, the final result giving the; Tauranga team to win by a margin of eight games. The visiting team arrived at 9 a.m. and returned to Whakatane the same night. Mr McCulloch, speaking on behalf of the visitors, thanked the President and members of the Tanranga Club for making the visit a most enjoyable one, and expressed the hope that a return match could be arranged at Whakatane at an early date.
