FAMOUS SHIP
THE IIIVER CLYDE. Ihe famous tramp steamer River Clyde, which made history in the Gallipoli landing in 1915, has recently been in Thames under he new name, Angelica. She had been requisitioned by the Admirality, and was commanded by Oaftain Edward Unwin R.N., who won the Victoria Cross at the landing on Beach V. This landing was not excelled in gallantry by any other incident of the warjand, unfortunately, it was not surpassed in the deadly losses sustained in proportion to the number of men engaged. But (says the London contributor to the Edinburgh- Weekly Scotsman) one hardly supposes that the refusal of the Admiralty, at the end of the war, to retain this ship as a national memorial to the 29th Division will be revised now, for a military correspondent who has raised this issue admits that the Spanish owners who bought the vessel for £II,OOO from the Admiralty, have refitted her at a cost of £30,000; so that the “reasonable figure” at which they are prepared to sell her must be a good deal more than the sum originally paid for her to the Admiralty. In any case a tramp steamer is not a very convenient form of national memorial.
