FIFTY YEARS AGO
(The following extract appeared in the Bay of Plenty Times 50 years ago to-day.)
Church of England, Tauranga. Tne vestry of Trinity Church acknowledges with thanks, subscriptions and donations towards repairing and renovating the church building, seriously damaged by lightning last November, At the recommendation of the architect, it is proposed to erect a tower, including belfry, in his opinion the tower is absolutely necessary in order to strengthen the west gable (one oi the large beams being shattered) and to secure the stability of the building in general.
The vestry after naming late repairs amounting to £76 18/11, has now in hand a sum of £92 5/7, but not sufficient to enable it to undertake the erection of a tower, therefore, the vestry beg to inform the public that further subscriptions and donations will, bo thankfully* received towards effecting this most desirable object. The response given to late appeals encourages the vestry in boHciting further help, and trusts this request for aid will meet with such cheering and liberal rseult as the former. The cost of erecting towers, exclusive of cash in hand, will not be less than £IOO. The.vestry avails itself of this opportunity of bearing public testimony of the liberal and Christian spirit pervading the community without distinction of creed. On behalf of the vestry, T. Tanks, Church Warden. On Tuesday last Mrs Mary Burtenshaw, the vagrant whom Mr Barstow pardoned on condition that -she would proceed to Tauranga by the first steamer, was, charged at the Auckland Police Court with breaking her pledge, and sent to gaol for a month. Although the justice of this proceeding is not very apparent wo arc much obliged both to the Resident Magistrate and his victim. Mary is much more at home in Mount Eden than she would have been here.
