NOVEL BANNED
PUBLISHED BY NEW ZEALANDER. London, March 4. The magistrate who sat at Bow Street Police Court! to-day decided that a novel by Norah James, published by Eric Partridge, recently of Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, was obscene, and ordered the destruction of the printed copies. The Public Prosecutor, Sir Archibald Bodkin, said the book had 239 pages, and the story covered a period of two days. It was told in the form of conversations by perams who were entirely devoid of decency and morality. Blasphemy was freely indulged in by all the characters. Filthy language and indecent situations were the whole keynote of the book. It was amazing that such a collection of degrading muck had been printed by any firm. Defending counsel said Partridge himself read thet manuscript, and i/t was also well recommended by a well-known reader. He admitted it had many horrible things, but the intention was to mirror the lift?, language and habits of certain sections of the community. Miss James was present throughout the hearing.
