FATAL ACCIDENT

YOUNG WOMAN KILLED

New Plymouth, March 5 A fatal accident occurred on a level crossing about half a mile north of Hawera this morning, the victim being a young woman, Mrs Gladys Ethel Evans, wife of Mr W. K. Evans, who is employed in the Public Trust Office at Hawera. Mrs Evans was killed instantly when she fell in front of a fastmoving train at the Turuturu Road level crossing. The train, a mixed goods and passenger train, was due at Hawera from New Plymouth at 9.50 a.m., and was travelling slightly behind schedule. Prompt application of the brakes brought the train to a standstill within 100yds of the crossing, and the driver and fireman, and the guard, Mr D. Myers, hastened back to the crossing to find the woman’s body, which was terribly injured. Death was instantaneous. As nothing could be done the train was taken into Hawera, from where the engine and van were despatched with a constable. An ambulance and doctor were also sent, and the body brought in. Among the unfortunate woman’s belongings was a receipt, which subsequently led to identification.
