NOTES. The committee of the WhaEatane Racing Club have decided lo allow their annual races to lapse Ibis year owing lo a shortage of hoi'ses In the district (says “Calendar” in the Dpoliki Herald). Opotiki equines have of late years been the mainstay of the fixture, but with practically all the teams away visiting the larger centres the hopes of the Whakutane Club were TaSt bright, so it was decided to abandon The fixture. To make a small meeting pay without a tolalisalor permit Ts'a hard proposition, no matter how small the sake money. To set an old-established Club go by the board fills one with regret, as the Whakatane fixture has been in existence in the vicinilp of forty years. In the old days it had a place in the Turf Register, as looking over one of 1888 the other day 1 came across' the results mentioned. If the Whakatane Club could purchase a suitable property to lay down a track it should not be a hard task to pi’oeure / a totalisa’tor permit. If this could be done it would only be a matter of a few years when they could be making a fair margin of profit. In fact with direct * ail way communication they are really in a betttr position than Opotiki in this respect. R White, a prominent Queensland squatter, was disqualified By the stewards of the Queensland Turf Club for twelve months for improper practices as the owner of Karadui at the Ascot course ou February 16. The trainer Stansfleld, and the jockey, Hornery’ were disqualified for similar periods. At the auction sale of Mr J. “Baron’s" horses in Sydney recently, Magniflco (by • Magpie—Charleville), the two-year-old brother to Windbag’, was included in the catalogue. The offic. iating auctioneer boldly stated that he would not start the colt for a bid of less than 2000 guineas. There was no response and Magniflco went out 'of the ring unsold. Mr “Baron” paid 4000 guineas for Magniflco as a yearling, and it is held to be quite oeytain that the colt will not be raced at two years old. Avant Courier, by Valais—Courante. who was bought when a yearling for t 5500 guineas by the Melbourne sportsman Mr E. M. Pearce, has been leased for a period of two years to the trainer A. E. J. Austin, and he will be raced in Queensland. Though Avant Courier has failed to develop the form fondly hoped for he registered at least one noteworthy feat when he defeated Trivaive in the Caulfield Guineas.
