For four days’ fishing the par- +_ secured five swordfish. y on ’Wednesday Mr Harden captured B swordfish weighing 4121 b., and Dr Ward a swordfish of 2751 b. The two fish fought very tenaciously. Mr Mellish landed a swordfish of 4581 bon Thursday. It was foul-hook-ed and fcught for six and a-quarter hours. It leaped out of the water on j numerous occasions and was responsible for a very ’thrilling display. On Saturday Dr Ward caught a swordfish, of 3361 b, and Mr Mellish also secured another which weighed 3241 b. Both fought strenuously and kept the anglers busy for about an hour and a-half on each occasion. Since tho opening of the season about the middle of January the various parties aboard tho launch Naomi have captured off Mayor Island fifteen swordfish, twenty-one mako sharks, a dozen sharks of other species. and numerous kingfish. The Naomi leaves to-morrow morn-, ing for Mayor Island with a party of four visitors. Two parties from Taranaki are over at the island in local launches. On Saturday one of the party landed a swordfish. Two launches from Mercury Bay arrived at Mayor Island on Saturday. Mr McHardy, a well-known sportsman, is aboard one of the launches. There is now on view in Mr E. Munro’s window a photograph of seven swordfish caught by Colonel Oolan .and Mr Preston, from the launch Naomi in two days recently. As already reported two parties secured eighteen big fish for thirteen days’ fishing—the Naomi’s tally ! being fifteen fish. Messrs Seymour and party, of Kaiti. Gisborne are going out in the Naomi next week.
