SACKING FROM FLAX
DtfNEMN INDUSTRY: The establishment in Dunedin of phormium fibre-spinning and weaving mills for the manufacture of sacking is taking more concrete shape. The finished material now shows tEat the difficulty of converting the Dominion’s native fibre into a light-weight, soft spinnable substance suitable for commercial use has been overcome. It is understood that the processes have been patented, and that plans for the lay-out of the proposed mill are now completed. The damp atmosphere of Dunedin should be eminently suitable for spinning and weaving, since the district has an abundance of water, coal and cheap power. The fact that the raw materia! is not now grown in the immediate neighbourhood is thus more than compensated for.
