INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC

MANY HUNDREDS AFFECTED. Suva, Jan. 23 An epidemic of broncho-pneumonic influenza has occurred on the island of Rotuma, 000 miles north of Fiji, which is under the Fijian adminTstration. The first case occurred on December 4, after the arrival of the inter-island steamer Makatea. With the exception of Dr Carew. ihe Resident Commissioner, two other Europeans and about 30 Fijians who are proving to be immune, every one of the 2300 inhabitants is affe'cted. There have been 31 deaths, equal to 1.3 per cent, of the population. The epidemic is now* abating. Practically the whole of <TTe work of attending the sick devolved on on Dr Carew, as the native medical practitioner was also a sufferer.
