CLERGY STIPENDS
TOO LOW IN AUCKLAND DIOCESE. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, Oct. 13 The fear, that the low stipends paid to many clergy was likely to interfere seriously with the spiritual value of their work was expressed by Archbishop Averill in his charge to the Auckland Diocesan Sydnod yesterday. In ac- . dance with the resolution passed last year a Bill would be introduced into the present Synod in order to fix the minimum stipend for all clergy at .£350 per year, together with free house and travelling expenses. This was a question of vital importance to the diocese, as the standard of stipends was below that in other dioceses in New Zealand and the inevitable result was they could not hope to secure and retain the services of a really efficient body of clergy, when a more adequate living could j be obtained elsewhere. The assist- j anoe now offered by the Central ; Fund was saving the diocesfc. from i disgrace, and many of the clergy j from semi-starvation.
