Bay of Plenty Times. TUESDAY APRIL,2I, 1926. LOCAL AND GENERAL

The Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister for Railways, in a statement at Auckland on the policy to be applied to unprofitable lines, says there are a number of branches in the country which cannot be made to pay their way. In order that these shall not be a drag on the administration apd that they may continue in operation until other less expensive transport methods are available, it has been decided that the consolidated fund shall bear the loss.

Speaking at a Fire Brigade function at Whakatane last week, Lieut. Morgan, who attended the Fire Brigades’ Conference at Dunedin, said that he had been asked to join with Tauranga, Te Puke, Opotiki and Rotorua, and hold competitions in the Bay of Plenty. It had also been suggested that they join in with the North Island Association and send a team of competitors away every six months.

It was resolved at the last meeting of the Rotorua County Council that it be a recommendation to the incoming Council that it should be made a rule that all correspondence other than that which might be deemed extraordinary, be in the hands of the clerk twentv-four hours before the meeting. —If local bodies generally adopted this rule it would tend to facilitate the despatch of business.

At the last meeting of the Whakatane Harbour Board letters were read from Messrs J, J. Craig, Ltd., and Winstones, Ltd., asking for the sole right to take sand from the sandspit near the Heads, and offering to pay a royalty of 3d per cubic yard for the privilege over and above the royalty imposed by the Marine Depailment. On the motion ot the Chairman, seconded by Mr Sumner, it was resolved to reply that the Board was not in a position at present to accept the offer made by the above firms. It was mentioned that negotiations were in progress to have the sandspit vested in the Board.

Beale presiding over a fair attendance. —It was decided to hold a tournament in the Town Piall in about four weeks—A letter was read asking for the arrangement of a match between the well-known boxers Jim Broadfool and Scott. — It was stated that there were prospects of arranging a good programme, and it was agreed that the committee meet in a week with a view to preparing the programme. Mr Len Norris is the secretary and will be pleased to hear from boxers wishing to take part in the tournament

The advantages of having the number plates of motor vehicles provided with some sign indicative of the district in which it is registered was stressed at the Rural Counties Conference at Hamilton on the 15th inst. It was considered by delegates iliat in dication letters, as formerly, were of immense benefit to travellers local bodies and the public generally. Often a person stranded in a place could secure a lift home by knowing the districts from which passing cars came. Identification letters were also useful in cases of accident. All the delegates of the sixteen county councils represented favoured some identification mark, and finally it was decided to urge the Government to amend the Motor Vehicles Act to provide that number plates shall indicate the district in which the vehicle is garaged.

A meeting of the committee of the Bay of Plenty Jockey Club was held at the Secretary's office on Monday night, Mr A. Brown presiding. The financial statement in connection with the recent race meeting was submitted and was considered very satisfactory. A committee was appointed lo meet the Racecourse Domain Board, wit'u a view to discussing a policy for the improvement of the course appointments.
