YACHTING NEWS
Mr P. F. Carler, Commodore of the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club, has received two inquiries for plans of the champion seven-footer “ Speedwell ” now at the Dunedin Exhibition, Both inquiries are from Dunedin, and the letters make vtry pleasant reading, moreover, Mr Brainsley, manager of the Auckland Court, is in receipt of countless inquiries regarding the boat. The fallowing telegram was received by Mr Carter last week :
“Beat in good position being well shown. Proving a big attraction tsp.cially amongst the bovs. Many favourable opinions being passed on her; she is the envy of all yachting boy?.” \ later telegram states that Mr Brainsley has received an excellent offer for the Speedwell, which Mr Carler has decided to accept, which will thus establish the beginning of the Tauranga class at Dunedin. The Club has received advice from Mr W. A. Wilkinson, winner of the £SO rjfflT to the effect that he will donate £5 of the prize back to the club. The seven-footers race on February 3, which was in default, wi'l be re-sailed on Saturday next. This will be the last yacht race of the season, already some of the 14-fooicrs are stripped and ‘on the hard.”
was necessary —before having the meters installed, ft was interesting to note the result of delay in erecting the new meter board. The Council’s officers soon became insistent, and when I taxed them regarding the matter they admitted that the Mayor was wanting to know when the meters would be installed. Ido not propose to mention the names of the two officers concerned, but would say that they were perfectly courteous to myself. and loyal to their employers. The Mayor evidently resents the discovery that he was personally interested in having a meter installed in my bouse. Why should he ? It is surely bis du y as guardian of the public purse to see that all the revenue to which the Council is entitled is secured. If the Mayor will prove that he made no inquiries from his officers as to when the meters would be installed in my house, and that the repeated inquiries made of me were not made at bis instigation, then he can consider my letter as withdrawn, but might I here be permitted to point out that for some years past I have earned additional responsibilities in connection with the McLaren’s Falls scheme, and being much understaffed I considered it necessary to forego my holidays. During the recent Christmas holidays the work of installing the second generator was carried on without intermission under my personal supervision. At the termination of ten years’ service with a public authority it is not unusual for an officer to be granted leave. In marked contrast to that, however, I find the Mayor making repealed inquiries as to when meters were to be installed in my house 1 regret very much that the Mayor’s action has rendered the above explanation necessary, as previously I have mentioned the incident to only two or three. My note to the Mayor was written, primarily to put on record that I desired to have my account adjusted as from the date of leaving the Council’s employ. —I am, etc., LLOYD MANDENO.
