PURE FOOD LAW SCANDAL

One of the worst scandals' in the hisfory "f the Pure Food Laws of the city has hceu disclosed, another month’s investigation- hy the Health Depart, mont revealing that 300,000 gallons of adulterated milk have l>een sokl daily for years. The investigations also show that nearby municipalities arc affected in a similar manner, Jersey City’s supplies being twenty-one per cent, ndtdteraied, in many cases to such an extent as to hei practically water. The corruption existed in the Health Department of New York, ft being disclosed that the Department’s inspectors arc not trusted, and that uniformed policemen in many instances are being used to test the milk. The Department's efforts to stop the shipment of so-called milk into the city were frustrated when the railway employees were h'-Mied hy interested parties to hide the impure supplies. Cream was adulterated heavily with oil, A elijiie of h'r.ekmailers existed, levying a tribute upon the dishonest dealer, mid r a threat to reveal the conditions. Four men arc now being held by the police, and grand jury indictments are ixpeeted. One blackmailer confessed that he collected 100.000 dollars yearly. The Department’s officials claim that powuTul forces are working , against them, incriminating evidence being stolen from the record room. —(A. aml N.E.)
