The New Zealand-bred gelding Pilliewinkie has not lost any of his many friends for the race in consequence of his defeat by Windbag. Pilliewinkie nob only meets Windbag 71b better, but 8.13 will be a comparati a luxury to him (remarks an Australian exchange). While he may not be so handy in a field as the Alagpie horse, he has more than once in Sydney shown that he can hang on to pace and unwind a long finishing run, and those are the two best qualifications for the Cup. The final mile in tha last Alelbourne Cup was run in 1.41,

but recently Filliewinkie sprinrehis last mite in 1-38 3-4. O course, he had not- previously bun taxed in the race and was com paratively fresh when he otgau li long run, but his owner is •untied to think that in the burly, burly of a Melbourne Cup ra c where luck counts ior so much, hi: line stayer will at least bo ill |h ( final picture, and that will be sown satisfaction to Sir Samuel, even il lie does miss the big prize. When he pulled up after winning the Rangiora Cup, Count Caron r would not have blown a natch out (says ‘’Mascot’). 1R ,vas always well placed in the hie went, and Ids performance, was mt only one of the easiest winning >nes accomplished in an importaa: went, but the most impressive. On tiangiora form, it is ob dens duit vherever Deucalion finishes in (he Jup Count Cavour should fin-sh in rout of him. P. Dempsey, who has been ridng in England for the last few nonths, has returned to Melbourne or a holiday. He rode Manfred t Moonec Valley the other day,

and will be on ihe thrce-year-old jn (lie Meibomne Cup.
