BRIDGING THE MOTU

The East Coast Guardian, in referring to the above matter, says: “The necessity of a bridge over the Motu River was brought before the Ray of Plenty Development League in the form of a remit from the Opotiki. County Council about two years ago. The remit was adopted by the League, which lias made repeated representations to th;■ Government on the subject ever since. These representations have resulted in a complete engineering survev having been made of a suitable site for a bridge- The ne>xfc step is to request the Government to make provision on the Public Works Estimates during the current session for an amount that will cover the cost of the preparation of plans of the proposed bridge, together with the; cost of the construction work that mav be undertaken before the ordinarv session of Parliament next: year. It is anticipated that the County Council’s roadconstruction works on the coast will be .sufficiently advanced twelve months hence to enable; motorists to travel between Opotiki and theMotu River, arid unless the- Government acts promptly it will be difficult. and of comparatively lirtle. use, for the County Council to continue road-construction works between the Morn River and Cape Runaway. A road in complete continuity between Opotiki and the Cape is urgently needed, but unless the Government takes immediate action in the direction of building a bridge 1 over the Motu River such continuity will be impossible. A good traffic bridge is required, and by making immediate proviso?] for- such a bridge the Government will assist in a work of national importance and urgency.’'
