Speaking at the meeting of the Borough Council on Wednesday night, Cr Ollard said that several slips'had recently occurred at the Monmouth Redoubt. Some protective measures were necessary.--The matter was referred to the Chairman of the Endowment Commitee- to report upon. The engineer informed the Matamata County Council on Friday that the No 3 Highways Beard was urging that the Tauranga-Matainata (Kaimai) read within the Tauranga county should be a Government road. He suggested also that the length of tliis road to* Matamata. countv from the fcot of tlic hills to the boundaries should be treated likewise. A resolution endorsing the sus'crostinn was carried, the secretary to write to 11 1 <* Public Works Department accordingly.
Transfers to the valuation roil were agreed to at the meting of the Borough Council on Wednesday as follows- E. Chadban to H. He-Ken-wn. Lots 2,3, 4. and 5, of subdivision of lots 626 and 627. Section 2; Public Trustee* to Mrs K. Brain, Let. 146, Section 1. and other allotments in borough.
The Church of England Synod of the Wellington Diocese passed the following resolution at tin' conclusion of its proceedings: “That as the term of their departure from the shores of. Cr Jones reported to the Borough Council on Wednesday evening that tlio industries commitee of the Chamber cf Commerce had conferred with a committee appointed by tin Borough Council, the former asking for remission of rates, water and electricity charges to> any firms establishing industries in Tauranga. He moved: Tliat the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce be informed that tin's Council is fully seized of the desirability of encouraging industries and is prepared to offer the inducement of cheap electric current and to assit in any other way that lies within_ its powf-r- —The motion was seconded by Cr Whiting and carried unaniniouslv. Th<> New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Co., Hamilton, received cable, advice from its London manager, Mr J. B. Wright to the effect that Anchor brand butter is bringing 192/ salted and 204/ unsalted. Air Wright reports tliat the market is quiet temporarily, but he expects renewed activity shortly, with the possibility of higher prices, the consumption of butter being maintained at a good level. Cheese’ is selling at 92/ for white and coloured. Mr Wright reports that tlie; reaction he forecasted last week has set in. but he does not expect it to fall below 88/• Meantime, he adds, an accumulation of 220, GOO crates at Montreal is having a. bearing on the market. The position cf the casein and milk powder markets is unchanged. At the meeting of the Borcugh Council on Wednesday night the following letter was read from Mr B L. Thomas, Acting Secretary of the Tauranga Electric Power Board ; “T beg to advise that my Board have passed a resolution accepting the terms and conditions for the supply cf electric current, the purchase of existing lines, and other matters as enumerated in your letter, dated June 29 last, and arrangements are now being" made to take a poll cf the ratepayers on or about August 30 on proposals to borrow £IOO,OOO for the purposes of the Board. At the same meeting a. resolution was carried approving of the arrangements made by your Council for the supply of electric, power to Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth and Co., Ltd., at Aongatcte. I was afsc- instructed to place on record tht, Beard's appreciation of the courtesy extended to the members of my Beard by the members of your Electricity Commitee at tlie several conferences held.” —The letter was received.
Another mark of development in the industrial life of Tauranga improsed itself upon the oars of townsfolk yesterday. This consists of an electrically operated syren which has been installed by Mr S. Pemberton in his joinery works in Devoupcrt Road. The syren which was specially imported, by- the Electricity Department has considerable power and made itself plainly heard at distances up to one, mile. An amusing interlude followed the first trial which was made in the Borougli Workshops for adjustment purposes. Owing to the resemblance of its tone to that cf the syren on the chemical fire engine certain suspicions were aroused with the result that the police were called in tc make investigations. The genial constable, however. was not so easilv misled and quickly ran the offending rival syren to its lair.
