DEALT WITH BY GENEBAL PURPOSES ( ()MMiTTEE. A meeting of the General Purposes C'onipnittoc of the Taurnuga Borough Council was held in the Council Cham--Im?is on the 'evening of. Wednesday, July 2, when there, were present : 1 r C. Wljiting (chairman of the General Purposes Committee,, in the chair), His Worship the Mayor. Mr B. Dive, Crs F. J- Ariely, E. M. M u limns, F. H. Hammond, V. J. Scantlehury, and 0. H. Ollard. The following matters were dealt with hy the Committee:— Abattoirs Matters. ]Jr W. Butt, Auckland, wrote offering his services as head slaughterman at the abattoirs. Mr A. H. Towgood. Otaliuhn, wrote asking for information as to how the abattoirs were to be worked. Jfc was decided to file tbe letters for reference. Durham Street Corner. Mr C. Lowe, Secretary of the r l anranga Fire Board, wrote in regard to the Durham Street corner and stated: “My Board desire to inform your Council that this corner is still in a dangerous state for the motor reel to negotiate, and trusts that the Council will take the earliest opportunity of making it safe for traffic.” The Mayor moved —That the matter he referred to the C hairman of the Works Committee and the foreman, with power to act, —Seconded hy Cr Ollard and carried. Fire Station Site. Mr O. Lowe. Secretary of the 1 auranga Fire Board, wrote asking .the Council to state what price it jvill accept for the freehold of the fire station. site, with the adjoining land at the rear. It was stated that certain land had been offered hy the Council to the Board at £lO per annum. It was decided to adhere to the Council’s previous resolution to lease the land. Cameron Road. Airs F-r. D. Mclntosh, wrote directing attention to the rough state of the footpath in front of her place of business on Cameron Road ; also, the watertahle, which wants cleaning out from the corner of First Avenue.

The matter was referred to the Chairman of the Works Committee ami the foreman, with power to act. Waikareao Bridge Proposal. Hon. J. G. Coates, of Public AVorks, in a Itt'ter dated June. 27, stated; “I. have to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 2oth instant and have noted your remarks respecting the Otnmoetai bridge proposal. In reply, I have to inform yon that I shall be pleased to have the matter fully gone into and at the same time will give; the representations you have made in this connection every consideration.” The letter was received. .Fencing the AVaterfront,

Mr F. S, 'EM.-son, district engineer of the Public Works Department, wrote regarding the fencing of the waterfront. He stated that the Counoil’s plan of fence appears to be satisfactory from a railway point of view. The Department will subsidise the cost of the fence to the extent of £2 per chain. He will be pleased if the Borough will, as soon as possible, have the fence erected. When the work is satisfactorily completed the Department’s share of the cost, based on £2 per chain, will he handed over.

The Council's design provided for concrete posts, galvanised iron pipes and cyclone wire netting, the estimated cost being £l4 per chain. It was decided —That the Public Works Department he asked to construct a fence of hardwood sawn posts and wire, with battens; the whole cost to be borne In’ the Department. Bequest to Top Trees.

Mr H. Paecoe, Sixth 'Avenue, wrote aski.ng permission to top five poplar trees adjacent to his property in Sixth Avenue. The request was agreed to, the work to bo carried out to the satisfaction of CTs Whiting and Jones. Sanitary Inspector. The Medical Officer of Health, Auckland, wrote requesting the Council to formally appoint Mr H. H. Martindalc as the Council's sanitary inspector. The Chairman moved —That the request be acceded to. —Seconded by Cr Allelv and carried.

Inspector’s Report. Mr C. X. Clark, inspector, submitted report for the month of June as follows : Licenses —Eight private car drivers applied and were granted certificates of proficiency; 29 renewal certificates were granted to private car drivers. One taxi-car. two taxi-drivers, one motor cyclist, one motor-carrier, thir-

A few breaches o the traffic by-laws are in hand. Buildings—Permits were grantee during the month to erect one build mg’, one outbuilding, lour motoi garages, 'one chimney and an alteratioi and renovation of an existing building Inspections were made during tin month of several buildings in eonr.s* of erection. Drainage Nuisances—— I Three permit: were granted to do drainage and sani tary work. A number of notices were issued to correct nuisances during the month. Sanitary—l inspected the sanitary depot weekly during the month am found the pans; in good condition, - am the depot generally in good order. Several complaints were received during the mouth regarding horses and cattle wandering at night time in the borough. Rubbish Tip—The notices to be erected at the tip are to hand, and the same will he erected at the tip during the month ; also, the indicator post, directing the place of tipping, which will bo removed from time to time by the contractor.; The days ami horn's available foe- tha deposit of rubbish arc Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The tip is under the supervision of the sanitary contractor, and persons found trespassing on the tip without authority from the Council will lie liable to prosecution. Noxious Weeds —Several notices were issued to clear weeds. Most of my notices have, been complied with. A man was employed during the month to clear several endowments. The report was received. Messrs G. Forbes and Co. wrote asking permission to eyect a fireproof building, for the storage of benzine, on Mr Padlie’s property in Grey Street, Cr Scantlebury moved—That the application be granted. The motion was seconded by the Mayor and carried. The question of the Council building a central depot for the storage of inflammable oils was discussed, but no nctioni was taken. The application of Mr J. Benson, for a license for a building for fish curing, granted.

Foreman’s Report. Mr W. H. Xeilson, foreman, submitted the following report for the month of June ; 1 — Unloading 23 yards of sand from punt, £l. 2 Chipping and filling up and sanding Cliff Hoad, footpath, £3 C/. J—Filling up and sanding footpath in Park Street, £9 14/. 4 —Sale of two loads of pumice at 31 a load, 10/. (Continued on Page 3.)
