BORORGH LOAN PROPOSALS
CONSIDERATION DEFERRED. At the meeting of the Borough Council last night, Cr Whiting (cliairman) introduced, on behalf of the Mayor, who is absent in Auckland- the question of taking a poll ratepayers on a, proposal to borrL ,£2OOO for the improvement of roads, as decided upon at a meeting of the Council on May 26. It is proposer! to expend the money m metalling a portion of Eleventh Avenue "from Cameron Road to the Dairy Factory, and the road from McLean Street to the neighbourhood of the railway station. Cr Whiling moved to the effect, that the poll* of ratepayers be taken. He Furnished details concerning the proposal, as already published. Cr Ollard seconded pro forma. Cr Scantlebury was against taking the sum of £9OO from the general fund, as proposed by the Mayor. Cr Glinkard was opposed tb taking money out of rates for capital expenditure. He l moved an amendment -That consideration of the matter be deferred. —This would, hi; said, permit; any councillor to give notice of motion to rescind the resolution passed at the meeting on May 26. Cr Scantlebury seconded the amendment:, which was carried. The Chairman referred to the necessity of providing pipes for storm water drainage in Marsh Street and the neighbourhood of the railway station. He said the 1 Public Works Department would lay certain pipes and these were now required. The pipes would be costly and a portion of the expense might be met out, of a lean.
It was decided that sufficient pipes be purchased to; enable the necessary drainage to proceed. The question of acquiring recreation grounds was referred to;.
Cr Scantlebury advocated the acquisition of a recreation ground for football, etc. Ho indicated certain areas which he considered would he suitable and suggested that the lands be taken under the Public Works Act.
The matter of acquiring Mrs C. T. Hardy’s land on the eastern waterfront was discussed and it was ultimately decided to refer the matter to the special committee to prosecute certahr inquiries and report to the Council. Ci- own . - - ,ArdieG of motion to-
